The AH-64 is the United States Army's primary attack helicopter. Production
began in 1982 and the first unit was deployed in 1986. The Apache is a quick
reacting, airborne antitank weapon system that can quickly maneuver in the
heaviest enemy territory. Its mission is to destroy, disrupt or delay the attack
long enough for friendly ground units to reach the scene.
The Apache is designed to fight day and night and in adverse weather conditions
throughout the world. It is equipped with a Target Acquisition Designation Sight
and Pilot Night Vision Sensor which permits the two-man crew to navigate and
attack in darkness. The principle mission of the Apache is to destroy enemy
tanks with the Hellfire missile. It can also carry a 30mm M230 chain gun and
Hydra 70 missiles. These weapons are lethal against a wide variety of targets.
The Apache has a full range of aircraft survivability equipment and has the ability
to withstand hits from rounds up to 23mm in critical areas. These helicopters
fired the first shots of the Gulf war. The Apache performed admirably during war
against both moving and stationary targets.
The Apache has been sold to Israel, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Greece.
